The Hera Women Group is a self-help group established in 1998. It was registered as a self-help group with the Ministry of Home Affairs, Heritage and Sports, department of Social services within Nyando district with registration number NDO/WD/508. The Group consists of 11 members aged between 20 to 40 years. It constitutes the Chairlady, Secretary, Treasurer together with 5 members who are employed and other members who are unemployed.

The group's main objectives are as follows:
  • to uplift the standard of living of their families and community
  • to be self reliant.

Hera Women Group deals in hand crafts such as basketry, family life education, pottery, cookery, tie and dye and has future plans for an orphanage home if funds are available.

After establishment, the Group has worked to get cash income by selling handcraft such as coasters, pencil stand, earth pot, hand bags, with local materials such as papyrus. They are sold to visitors in Sondu/Miriu Hydropower Project Office). The Group member each has Swiss goats to get milk for their families.

The Group determined as a part of their social activities to establish public library in the Thurdibuoro area to give children and youths chances to read books after school because neither text books nor story books are available in all schools in the area.
