Letters from Apondo Kasaye Primary School

Around 60 pupils and 5 teachers visited the sites and office on 21 July and wrote thanks letter to express their wonderful experiences. Some selected letters are shown below. James guided them to the Site and was disappointed because his name didn't appear in their letters.

  1. Wyclife Omondi (Boy, 14 years)

I was very delighted when you allowed my fellow students and I together with our teaching staff to visit your office and eventually tour the SMHHP plant. Everybody was wax merry and patted you at the back in words and lastly with a thump slogan as appreciation symbol at the end of the day.

The experience we went through taught entertained and cherished us all and each and every one of us had a story to tell our "Babas" and "Mamas" and feeble grandparents at home. My 85 year-old grandma enjoyed my story of the eventful day that made her laugh and nod repeatedly. The SMHHP reminded me of the old adage -A bad beginning always makes a good ending. The ongoing project has gained momentum hence high expectations at its completion come the year 2004.
May God bless you in all your endeavors till you complete your mission.

  1. Rose Auma (Girl, 14 years)

I would like to take this short chance to thank you for allowing us on Saturday last week to come and see how SMMHP is being constructed in our motherland, Nyakach.

I hasten to point out that we were given special treatment the moment we arrived. Our heads were sheltered with helmets fantastically and comfortably. Within a fraction of a second the bus came, we boarded it to the intake where we saw many things, some of which were peculiar to us. We were then taken to the tunnel, which is to be 6.2km long and constructed as a King's palace.

We then went back to the Project office where we were provided with soft drinks that quenched our thirsts after a long busy day.

Thank you for constructing us a wonderful school, we are in a paradise in the bush.

  1. Dennis Anyumba (Girl, 15 years)

I would like to take this golden opportunity to thank you for having given us pupils and the entire teachers a chance to witness the Sondu/Miriu Hydropower Project when we visited the site on 21st July 2001.

It was interesting that we were welcomed well and given protective devices (helmets).

Oh! the bus we boarded was moving on a high speed between the your office and the site. Inside it, we thought were in a moving palace located in the air. Everybody's head was in colorful helmets set for protection. We reached the tunnel safely and we were told to put on the helmets tightly as anything could happen.

We were told the tunnel was 6.2km long tunnel. Water will be diverted to the Power Station through the 6.2km long tunnel and will take the water to the top of Nyakach escarpment.

I was surprised indeed when I was told that the construction work by LotI-1civil works for the intake and the tunnel were commenced in March 1999 and would be completed in 2003 if God allows. We were told that the Sondu/Miriu project when completed in 2004 will have a maximum output of 60MW from two units and an average annual energy production of 330Gwhr per year.

Lots of thanks go to the Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC) for funding the SMHHP. We also thank KenGen for building the schools and the church for the Nyakach community.
